A growing geopolitical risk scenario emerging from recent tensions is the potential *fragmentation, or “balkanization, ” of Iran* in the event of a large-scale military confrontation. While this remains a tail risk rather than a base case, its consequences for regional stability and energy markets would be profound.
Balkanization could emerge as a *direct consequence of external military intervention*, potentially triggering prolonged regional instability rather than regime change. Iran’s complex ethnic composition, including Persians, Azeris, Arabs, Kurds and Baluch populations, creates varying degrees of separatist potential, though current conditions do not indicate imminent territorial fracture.
*Khuzestan Province, which contains a significant share of Iran’s oil production, is often cited as a theoretical vulnerability due to its Arab minority population. However, the current probability of separation there appears **very low*, given the absence of a powerful, organized separatist movement capable of seizing control.
