It would reduce Iran’s dependence on China, which currently makes us uneasy. We want strategic and economic engagement, oil imports, investments both ways, and a north-south gas corridor with Russia and Iran, particularly as India is so gas deficient. Iran is also a Shia power with strategic importance. The US could use Iran as a counterbalance to Saudi Arabia and Turkey. India supports non-proliferation. A nuclear-armed Iran would destabilize the region, and acquiring nuclear weapons doesn’t change much anyway - look at Pakistan or North Korea.
Can the US and China resolve their trade differences in 90 days?
We hope so. A stable Chinese economy benefits India. Prolonged US–China conflict creates global anxiety and hurts us all. That said, this is also an opportunity for India; manufacturing is shifting, Apple’s exports from India to the U.S. jumped 150% last month. We’re seeing signs of a global transition. The dominance of the US dollar is being challenged, and a more multipolar currency world may emerge. It’s a big shift. India is also in deep trade talks with the US and if reports are right, it’s shaping into a strong agreement. Trump has a unique style, but the reality on the ground will force recalibration.
