Quietly, almost casually, we may be witnessing a true bifurcation point in the biggest geopolitical conflict of the past 80 years - and the most high-stakes political poker game since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Late at night on May 10, after the Victory Day parade in Moscow, Putin delivered a carefully worded address. He rejected the EU/Ukraine proposal for a 30-day ceasefire and countered with an offer to meet Zelensky in Istanbul - without intermediaries.

The format is calculated: it delays Trump’s threatened walkout if either side refuses to cooperate, while also reassuring Russia’s pro-war camp that there is no “backroom deal” in the making. Trump responded in ALL CAPS, urging Zelensky to go to Istanbul “immediately, ” but also added: at least we will know where everyone stands. No optimism, just pressure.

And still, Putin does not rush. War gives him leverage. But he is also wondering whether it is time to cash out - to extract the maximum from Trump’s wildly generous offer: Crimea, frozen frontlines, sanctions relief. Not bad for a man still bombing Kharkiv.

And yet, there is a catch. If Russia pivots West now - what happens if Trump flips or leaves? China will not forget a betrayal. And Beijing holds grudges longer than the Kremlin.

If Putin stays loyal to China - no carrots. No recognition. No relief. No sanctions removal. No Nord Streams. Trump’s pressure is building: direct sanctions, secondary sanctions, 500% tariffs on countries buying Russian oil. Add OPEC’s production hike - already more painful for Moscow than all Western sanctions together...

But going after Russian oil would be Trump’s nuclear option. A gesture of fury and frustration, if Putin does not agree to a bigger deal - not about Ukraine, but about a potential alliance against China. Because this is not really about Ukraine anymore. It is about redrawing the global chessboard. And if oil and gas sanctions do come, they will not just hit shadow fleet and pipelines. They will signal this: Russia has chosen China’s side.

That is the most important signal to watch.
